9 April 2010 @ 12.15am. Coffee Brand 1919 Bristot, Speciale (Italy)
We thought we would try to get here when the place was at its lunch time peak……it turned out that our timing was way off. Just a smattering of people were enjoying a leisurely coffee and/or bite to eat and the staff were obviously preparing for the onslaught. The first visit was quite busy so ultimately this didn’t matter.
Coffee – Espresso. Score 15.5/20 By SamWPresented in a wonderful extraction and decent height, this espresso showed a good depth of oiliness in the crema. The flavours were somewhat pronounced and offered some char and bitterness that played off one another like a game of pong on Commodore 64.
Crafted by a different barista than last visit, consistency is being demonstrated which is great to see.
Coffee – Short Macchiato. Score 15.5/20 By SamWThis coffee presented a bit short, filling only half the cup, however the crema was nice and thick. Upon finishing the macchiato, there was a slight dryness around the rim and in the bottom of the cup, but the blend held-up well considering that it is not roasted in Australia.
The flavour profile was similar to our previous visit, although a bit more smokey, a little smoother and somewhat sweeter. The bitterness was also greater than our first review.
Coffee – Cafe Latte. Score 14.5/20 By SimonLYes there appears to be consistency here, as SamW mentioned. This Cafe latte was similar to the last visit perhaps a touch under-strength though….but only a touch. It was user-friendly, smooth and gentle, very middle of the road. The lovely creamy milk nearly completely stole the spotlight, the espresso hovering in the background like a side-kick limited to a few choice one-liners or minor actions but not allowed to dominate.
Coffee – Ristretto Score 15/20 By SimonLSweet, rich and oily – which was a positive. As was the length of pour and presentation. A satisfying, albeit simple, espresso hit with a teeth-gritting finish that was a little astringent in its bitterness.
